Illiteracy poses an acute development challenge in Pakistan, which has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world, with less than 50% of the population over age 15 able to read and write. Literacy is even lower amongst women - only 30% of women over age 15 are able to read and write.

This inadequacy, particularly amongst women, exacerbates a variety of related problems including high birth rates, high infant mortality, social immobility, deficient nutrition, poor healthcare, domestic violence and social inequality. Similarly, the impact of basic education, particularly amongst women, permeates throughout the household and multiplies across generations.
